Katastrophale Ausfälle des Kühlsystems sind bei BMW-Fahrzeugen ein relativ häufiges Problem. Dies hängt mit dem maximalen Entlastungsdruck des Kühlsystems zusammen, den BMW gewählt hat, sowie mit einem nahezu vollständig aus Kunststoff bestehenden Satz von Kühlsystemkomponenten. Das Problem besteht darin, dass diese Kunststoffteile hunderte Male thermischen Zyklen ausgesetzt sind und unter dem schädigenden Einfluss von Hitze und Kühlmittel einen Teil ihrer Festigkeit verlieren. Die Folge kann ein gerissenes oder geplatztes Teil irgendwo im Kühlsystem sein. Dies gilt insbesondere für BMW-Fahrzeuge, die zwischen 1982 und 2006 hergestellt wurden.
