Katastrofala fel i kylsystemet är ett relativt vanligt problem för BMW-fordon. Det hänger samman med det maximala övertryck som BMW har valt för kylsystemet, i kombination med ett nästan helt plastbaserat kylsystem. Problemet är att plastdelarna genomgår hundratals värmecykler samtidigt som de utsätts för värmens och kylvätskans nedbrytande effekter, vilket gör att de förlorar en del av sin styrka. Resultatet kan bli att någon del i kylsystemet spricker. Detta gäller särskilt BMW-fordon tillverkade mellan 1982 och 2006.
