Catastrofale defecten aan het koelsysteem zijn een vrij veelvoorkomend probleem bij BMW-voertuigen. Dit houdt verband met de maximale overdruk waarbij het koelsysteem is ontworpen te werken, in combinatie met een vrijwel volledig uit kunststof bestaande set onderdelen. Het probleem is dat deze kunststof onderdelen honderden keren aan warmtecycli worden blootgesteld en door de schadelijke effecten van hitte en koelvloeistof een deel van hun sterkte verliezen. Het resultaat kan een gescheurd onderdeel ergens in het koelsysteem zijn. Dit geldt vooral voor BMW-voertuigen die tussen 1982 en 2006 zijn geproduceerd.
